F.A.Q

Some of our Frequently Asked Questions:

What Training Methods do you use?

Here at Training Tails, we pride ourselves on only using Positive Reinforcement techniques when training those happy tails!

What Is Positive Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement in animal training is giving your pet something they like (i.e. treat) when they offer a behaviour (i.e. sit) when you asked them to. By offering them a treat, the chance that they will offer that behaviour again increases. Each time we give them a treat we are strengthening the connection of the word with the behaviour they just gave us.

Can you give me an example of Positive Reinforcement?

Sure! This is Zara, she is one of the fuzzy family members here at Training Tails. If you asked Zara to give you the rope toy in front of her, you might use 'give' as the word for the cue. If she picks up the toy and brings it to you, then giving her a treat for her reward would mean she's more likely to bring you the toy next time you ask her to 'give' it to you!

What if treats aren't a reward my pet wants?

That's OK! This is AJ, he is another of the fuzzy family members here at Training Tails. He chooses not to eat treats, no matter what he's offered. But he loves his squeaky ball. If AJ was running around the dog park, and it was time to go home, you would have to call him to you so that you could attach his leash before leaving. After calling him, and he comes running over, you would give the ball to him as a reward for coming to you. This could be done as a gentle throw for him to catch, rolled on the floor, or even just handed straight to him. AJ would just be happy to have the ball to squeak as he walks out of the park with you.

Can I Know More About AJ and Zara?

Zara is a Bull-Mastiff x American Staffordshire Terrier, and she has taught me how to live life in the slow lane.

After hearing her story from one of the local rescue shelters, I immediately knew that AJ and I had to do a meet and greet with her! She was born 5/12/2017 in a pound, after her mother was picked up by the rangers. After spending the first 7 months of her life there, a rescue organisation picked her up, where she stayed for a month before coming home with me! She is very snuggly and will do almost anything to get a yummy treat.

AJ is a Blue-Heeler x American Staffordshire Terrier, and he has given me plenty of experience with high-energy working breeds.

Born 13/4/2017, AJ joined our family when he was just 7 weeks old. As a pup from an accidental litter*, the choices were to give him a home, or let him go to the shelter. Of course I scooped him up and took him home! He has always loved a good cuddle, and is very well mannered. He is very quick to pick up new tricks, and his brain works very well when it comes to working things out.

*The family members of AJ's parents have since gotten their dogs desexed to avoid any further accidental litters!
